1.9 What’s the best way to store the directory and accounting structure for a system?

It depends – on what you want to be able to do.

If you want to be able to do an INSTALL because you had some kind of failure, planned or unplanned, to the system volume set (MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET), or because you are replacing a system, then using the DIRECTORY option of STORE is ideal. Note, however, that if you make use of user volume sets, you MUST include the ONVS parameter for EACH volume set in order to get that portion of the directory structure that lies on the user volume set stored. It is a good idea to include the DIRECTORY (and ONVS) option as part of a combined disaster recovery SLT/STORE tape, because you should restore the directory structure before attempting to restore user files.

If you want to merge/migrate some or all of the directory structure from on machine to another or revise the volume set structure than using the BULDACCT.PUB.SYS program is the way to go.

Both these approaches are well described in HP’s documentation. Note: Earlier versions of BULDACCT were flawed, but the latest version seems to be more stable.

It is a wise System Manager, who is well versed in both techniques, and applies them regularly,
