3.2 I have an internal modem on a 9x9 that does not pick up. The phone line rings just fine. Is there a way to reset the modem, other than by rebooting the system?

First, you need a self-maintainer license, which you can get from HP if your system is on HP hardware support.

If you have such license, log on as MANAGER .SYS, and:

:sysdiag

consolan pdev=10/4/0 section=2(23)

[for a 9x8 system, use consolan pdev=56/56 section=2(23) ]

You will be asked which serial port to reset (local or remote). Answer remote.

This will reset the internal modem.

Of course, the trick here is to obtain the license - which, in the opinion of many SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY just to reset the internal modem. This has been a sore point for years now. Yes, it is now possible to get a license key in a few minutes on the Internet (at the ESC if you already have a hardware contract). However, the keys expire every 6 months and invariably yours will expire one day before you need it.

Further complicating matters, sysdiag is being replaced as of MPE/iX 6.5 with a diagnostic toolset migrated from the HP-UX side of the house. It remains to be seen how easy/hard this system will be to use.
